Frequency Tables Help us summarize data into a single table providing information about data values and their frequencies.

For example, a study was done on the number of hours of sleep a college student gets.

A sample of 29 students was gathered and for each participant, data was collected, giving:

2,2,3,3,3,3,3,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4, 5,5,5,6,6,6,6,7,7,7,7,7,7

Instead of counting each and every single little value, we can summmarize it into a frequency table:

            Data
(Hours of sleep) | Frequency
               2 | 3
               3 | 5
               4 | 8
               5 | 3
               6 | 4
               7 | 6

Relative frequency is the fractional proportion of times an answer or data value occurs per the total number of participants. So, for three hours of sleep, that makes up 5/29 participants, or .172.

Challenge

Nineteen immigrants to the U.S were asked how many years, to the nearest year, they have lived in the U.S. The data are as follows: 2 5 7 2 2 10 20 15 0 7 0 20 5 12 16 12 4 5 10

What is the relative frequency of immigrants who lived 15 years in the US?
